who is a question of when?
you are a question of when.
a question of when is a largely anonymous multi-media artistic collaboration between members of previously-established musical acts. It delivers an immersive and tactile experience of cinematic, ambient, angular, and hypnotic — yet infectious and hook-driven — music, spanning the emotional spectrum from beautiful, tender, and empowering to violent, abrasive, and terrifying.
Without a history of its own, based solely on the merits and depths of its artistic vision, a question of when was awarded funding from the Ontario Arts Council to produce its debut LP, when it happens to you — before having an online presence or having even been publicly announced by its members. Recorded on 2-inch analog tape and released across physical and digital formats from vinyl to dolby atmos 7.1.4 surround sound, when it happens to you presents a question of when‘s expansive and ambitious artistic vision on a 5-song journey through the 5 stages of grieving, accompanied by experimental, non-linear visuals. In tackling challenging subjects such as identity, suicide, substance use, and intergenerational trauma, a question of when compassionately and critically narrates and personalizes the political, with responsible provision of consulted-upon social and mental health support resources.
The out-of-music experience is a key ingredient to a question of when‘s immersive whole; not just in how its art is presented but who is meaningfully involved in its creation across continuums of ethnicity, gender identity, sexuality, and ability. In alignment with a question of when‘s mission of equity and inclusion in the arts, when it happens to you was righteously engineered, mixed, and mastered by women.
We are only at the beginning. It’s simply… a question of when.
